Concepto nuevo

Preferir: e → ie

Preferir (to prefer) has the same vowel change as querer: the e becomes ie in every form except nosotros and vosotros.

Pronoun Preferir Querer
yo prefiero quiero
tú prefieres quieres
él / ella / usted prefiere quiere
nosotros preferimos queremos
vosotros preferís queréis
ellos / ellas / ustedes prefieren quieren

Unlike gustar, preferir is an ordinary verb: the person who prefers is the subject. It goes straight into a noun or an infinitive, with no preposition:

  • Prefiero el té. — I prefer tea.
  • Luana prefiere quedarse en casa. — Luana prefers to stay at home. (Quedarse, to stay, carries a pronoun that changes with the person: yo prefiero quedarme, tú prefieres quedarte.)

A classic Spanish question: ¿Prefieres playa o montaña? — Do you prefer the beach or the mountains?
