Before you read
In this lesson's story, Marina and Luana go clothes shopping for a party. Here's the language of the shop floor and the till:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Disculpe. / Perdone. | Excuse me. (to usted) |
| ¿Tiene…? — ¿Tiene esta falda en verde? | Do you have…? — Do you have this skirt in green? |
| Es un poco caro. | It's a bit expensive. |
| elegante | smart, elegant |
| ¿Algo más? | Anything else? |
| Nos llevamos los dos. | We'll take both. |
| ¿Cómo va a pagar? | How are you paying? |
| Con tarjeta. / En efectivo. | By card. / In cash. |
With friends you say tú. With an older shop assistant — or whenever you simply want to be polite — use usted, which takes the él / ella form of the verb: ¿Tiene…?, ¿Me puede ayudar? Disculpe and perdone are the usted versions of perdona.
