What's Happening Right Now

The present continuous and a walk through the barrio

  1. 1

Estoy hablando: what's happening right now

Estar plus the -ndo form for what's going on at this very moment — and when Spanish doesn't use it.

    • What's happening now: estar + gerundio — Estoy hablando.
    • The gerundio: -ar → -ando, -er / -ir → -iendo — hablando, comiendo, abriendo. It never changes.
    • Watch leyendo (leer) and durmiendo (dormir).
    • ¿Qué estás haciendo? — or simply ¿Qué haces?
    • Simple present for habits — and for plans: Me voy mañana. El viernes cenamos en casa de Marcos.
    • I'm coming! — ¡Voy!

La tarta de cumpleaños: more about the gerundio

Gerunds that bend the rule, where the pronoun goes — and a surprise cake in Marcos's kitchen.

    • Some gerunds bend: leyendo, oyendo (i → y), pidiendo, diciendo, vistiendo, riendo (e → i), durmiendo (o → u).
    • For “I'm going”, Spanish usually says voy, not estoy yendo.
    • Pronouns go before estar or on the end of the gerundio: Me estoy vistiendo = Estoy vistiéndome.
    • When you attach the pronoun, add an accent: preparándose, divirtiéndonos.
    • Never between the two: not estoy me vistiendo.

  3. 3

Al and del: a + el, de + el

Spanish's only two contractions — al and del — on a slow walk through the neighbourhood.

    • a + el = al, de + el = del — always.
    • No contraction with la, los, las: a la plaza, de los niños.
    • The pronoun él never merges: la casa de él.
    • Verbs of movement: ir a, llegar a, volver a, venir de, salir de — Voy al parque. Vuelvo del trabajo.
    • The personal a goes before people as objects: Veo a Luana. Busco al profesor.
    • Dar un paseo — to go for a walk, a much-loved evening ritual in Spain.

Por el Retiro: a Sunday stroll

Por for moving through a place, seguir and llevar with the gerundio — and a Madrid Sunday from the Rastro to the Retiro.

    • Por + place = through, along, around: dar un paseo por el barrio. It never merges with el.
    • Por is also for when you thank someone: Gracias por el café.
    • Dar un paseo, pasear, dar una vuelta — three ways to go for a stroll.
    • Seguir + gerundio = still, keep on: Sigue lloviendo.
    • Llevar + time + gerundio = have been doing: Llevo dos horas esperando.
    • A Madrid Sunday: El Rastro, the Retiro — and la hora del vermú.
