Usted borrows the él / ella form
When you speak to someone as usted, the verb takes the él / ella form; ustedes takes the ellos / ellas form. That's true of every verb you know:
| To a friend (tú) | To a stranger (usted) | |
|---|---|---|
| hablar | ¿Hablas inglés? | ¿Habla usted inglés? |
| buscar (to look for) | ¿Buscas algo? | ¿Busca usted algo? |
| ser | ¿Eres de aquí? | ¿Es usted de aquí? |
| tener | ¿Tienes un mapa? | ¿Tiene usted un mapa? |
Because busca could also mean he or she looks for, usted is often kept in the sentence — it's clearer and sounds polite. In writing it's sometimes shortened to Ud. or Vd.
To get a stranger's attention, use the usted forms too: Disculpe… or Perdone… To a friend: Disculpa… or Perdona…
