Hypotheticals and Conditions

wenn-sentences and the past subjunctive

  1. 1

Wenn ich Zeit hätte: imagining the present

Unreal conditions with wenn + Konjunktiv II — and where the two verbs go.

    • Unreal present: wenn + Konjunktiv II, then Konjunktiv II or würde + infinitive: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr reisen.
    • Wenn sends its verb to the end; after the wenn-clause, the main clause opens with its verb: …, würde ich…
    • The halves can swap — Ich würde mehr reisen, wenn ich Zeit hätte — and a comma always separates them.
    • Short forms for the key verbs: wäre, hätte, könnte, würde; most others take würde + infinitive.
    • Mind the umlaut: hätte imagines, hatte reports the past. And it's always wenn ich du wäre.

Wenn es regnet, wenn es regnen würde: real or unreal?

Real conditions take the indicative, unreal ones the Konjunktiv II — plus falls, and wenn as “whenever”.

    • Real conditions: indicative in both halves — Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.
    • Unreal conditions: Konjunktiv II in both halves — Wenn es nicht regnen würde, würden wir fahren.
    • The present tense covers the future in real conditions: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich.
    • Falls — if, in case — is for real possibilities and also sends the verb to the end.
    • With the indicative, wenn can mean whenever; the Konjunktiv II makes it clearly imagined.
    • More short forms: müsste, sollte, dürfte.

Wenn ich das gewusst hätte: the past that didn't happen

Hätte or wäre + past participle for the roads not taken — and mixing past and present.

    • Past hypothetical: hätte / wäre + past participle — Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich gekommen.
    • Hätte or wäre? The same choice as in the Perfekt: movement and change of state → wäre.
    • In the wenn-clause, participle then hätte / wäre at the very end: wenn ich deine Nummer gehabt hätte.
    • Times can mix: Wenn ich in Bayern geblieben wäre, würde ich immer noch dort wohnen.
    • Without the umlaut — hatte, war — you're back in the real past.

Als ob: as if it were so

Als ob + Konjunktiv II for how things look, sound and feel — and the elegant short form als wäre.

    • Als ob + Konjunktiv II, verb at the end: Er tut, als ob er alles wüsste.
    • Drop ob and the verb jumps forward: als wüsste er alles, als wäre ich nie weg gewesen.
    • Typical lead-ins: tun, aussehen, klingen, sich anfühlen, es scheint.
    • Past als ob: hätte / wäre + participle — als ob sie geweint hätte.
    • Short forms worth knowing: wüsste, käme, gäbe, ginge.
    • Als ob! on its own is the German As if!
