The Konjunktiv II turns a plain question into a polite one — the German could you…? and would you mind…?

Könnte is konnte + umlaut, and like hätte the umlaut changes everything: ich konnte = I could (I was able to), ich könnte = I could (I would be able to), I might. It's also how you talk about possibilities: Es könnte regnen. — It might rain.

Add bitte — or the little word mal among friends — for extra warmth: Könntest du mal das Fenster aufmachen?
