The tense of written stories

Open a German novel, a newspaper or a book of fairy tales, and the past is told in the Präteritum — for every verb, not just sein, haben and the modals. You'll mostly need to recognise these forms; when you talk, keep using the Perfekt for most verbs.

Regular verbs work just like the modals: stem + -te + ending.

Pronoun spielen wohnen arbeiten
ich spielte wohnte arbeitete
du spieltest wohntest arbeitetest
er / sie / es spielte wohnte arbeitete
wir spielten wohnten arbeiteten
ihr spieltet wohntet arbeitetet
sie / Sie spielten wohnten arbeiteten

Stems ending in -t or -d — and a few others, like regnen (to rain) — add an extra e, so you can hear the ending: arbeitete, redete (talked), es regnete (it rained).
