The Accusative Case

When *der* becomes *den*

  1. 1

Der Hund, den Hund: the accusative

Your first German case: why der becomes den and ein becomes einen — and why nothing else changes.

    • The subject is nominative; the direct object is accusative.
    • Only masculine changes: der → den, ein → einen. Die, das and plurals stay the same.
    • Most "doing" verbs take the accusative — haben, sehen, kaufen, brauchen, suchen, besuchen — and so does es gibt.
    • Ask wen? or was? to find the object.
    • The article shows the object, so it can come first: Den Kaffee trinkt Marcos.
    • sein takes no object: Das ist der Park.

    Meinen, keinen: possessives and kein

Unseren Hund, keinen Zucker — possessives and kein in the accusative, at a very messy birthday bake.

    • Possessives add -en for masculine objects: meinen, deinen, seinen, ihren, unseren, euren, Ihren — Wir lieben unseren Hund.
    • Feminine, neuter and plural don't change: meine Mutter, mein Auto, meine Eltern.
    • kein = not a / no, with the same endings: keinen Bruder, keine Zeit, kein Auto.
    • kein replaces ein or no article; nicht does the rest.
    • Ich habe (keinen) Hunger / Durst — I'm (not) hungry / thirsty.
    • Don't wish Alles Gute zum Geburtstag before the day itself — many Germans think it's bad luck.

    Mich, dich, ihn: object pronouns

Me, you, him, it — the accusative pronouns, and why a cake is „ihn“.

    • Object pronouns: mich, dich, ihn, sie, es, uns, euch, sie / Sie.
    • The new one is ihn: er → ihn, like der → den.
    • It follows the noun's gender: der Kuchen → ihn, die Schokolade → sie, das Buch → es.
    • Short pronouns come early: Ich rufe dich morgen an.
    • Ich hab dich lieb for family and friends; Ich liebe dich for romance.

Für dich: durch, für, gegen, ohne, um

Five little prepositions that always take the accusative — on a rainy Sunday walk in the Grunewald.

    • durch, für, gegen, ohne, um always take the accusative — DOGFU.
    • Only masculine shows it: durch den Park, für meinen Bruder, für ihn.
    • Short forms: durchs, fürs, ums. Ohne often needs no article: ohne Milch.
    • Time: um acht = at eight; gegen acht = around eight.
    • für dich, ohne mich — pronouns go accusative too.
