Eating, drinking, and the German bakery

  1. 1

    Essen, trinken, nehmen

The verbs of every meal — two of them change their vowel — and the extra e in öffnen and arbeiten.

    • essen: ich esse, du isst, er isst — e → i, and du / er share isst.
    • nehmen: ich nehme, du nimmst, er nimmt; Ich nehme… = I'll have…
    • trinken is regular: ich trinke, du trinkst, er trinkt.
    • Stems in -t, -d or a cluster like -ffn add an e: er arbeitet, sie öffnet, es kostet.

    • Learn food with its article: das Brot, der Käse, die Milch.
    • A compound takes the gender of its last part: der Apfelkuchen, die Apfelschorle.
    • gern after the verb = like doing: Ich trinke gern Tee. — nicht gern = don't like.
    • mögen for liking things: ich mag, du magst, er mag — Magst du Kuchen?

    Ordering and paying

Ich möchte…, ich nehme… — order politely, ask for the bill and tip the German way.

    • Order politely with Ich möchte…, Ich hätte gern… or Ich nehme…
    • When ordering, a masculine ein becomes einen: einen Kaffee — but eine Apfelschorle, ein Wasser.
    • Ask for the bill: Zahlen, bitte! / Die Rechnung, bitte.
    • Zusammen oder getrennt? — together or separately.
    • Tip by naming the total — Machen Sie vierzig — or say Stimmt so!

From the farm to the market

A visit to Herr Schmidt's farm — vegetables, quantities and prices: Was kosten die Tomaten?

    • Feminine nouns in -e and -el add -n in the plural: die Tomaten, die Kartoffeln.
    • Was kostet…? for one thing, Was kosten…? for several.
    • Quantities go straight before the noun: ein Kilo Kartoffeln, 200 Gramm Käse.
    • 2,50 € = zwei Euro fünfzig; drei Euro das Kilo = three euros a kilo.
    • Sonst noch etwas? — Nein, danke. Das ist alles.
