First Steps

Pronouns and the two key verbs: sein, haben

  1. 1

    Hallo! Greetings and who's who

Say hello the German way and meet the personal pronouns — including the three jobs of sie.

    • Hallo works any time; Guten Morgen / Guten Tag / Guten Abend follow the clock.
    • Wie geht's? — Gut, danke! Und du?
    • Say who you are with Ich bin…: Ich bin Marina.
    • The pronouns: ich, du, er / sie / es, wir, ihr, sie, Sie — and ich is lower case mid-sentence.
    • du = one friend, ihr = several friends, Sie = polite you.
    • sie is she or they; with a capital, Sie is the polite you.

    Sein: who you are

One verb for name, origin, job and mood — the six forms of sein.

    • Sein = to be: bin, bist, ist, sind, seid, sind.
    • wir, sie (they) and Sie (polite you) all take sind; ihr takes seid.
    • Origin is aus: Ich bin aus Boston.
    • No article before a job or nationality, and women usually add -in: Sie ist Lehrerin.
    • Yes/no questions put the verb first: Bist du müde?

    Du, ihr or Sie?

Three words for “you” — when to use each, and how to ask someone's name.

    • du = one friend, ihr = several friends, Sie = polite you for one person or several.
    • Polite Sie has a capital S and the same verb form as sie (they): Sind Sie…?
    • With Sie come titles and surnames: Herr Schmidt, Frau Becker.
    • Wie heißt du? / Wie heißen Sie? — Ich heiße…
    • Wie geht's dir? / Wie geht es Ihnen?
    • When in doubt, start with Sie and let the other person offer du.

    Haben: what you have

Possession, hunger and thirst with haben — then sein and haben side by side.

    • Haben = to have: habe, hast, hat, haben, habt, haben.
    • Only du hast and er hat drop the b.
    • Hunger, thirst and time are things you have: Ich habe Hunger / Durst. Hast du Zeit?
    • Sein says what or how something is; haben says what someone has.
    • After haben, a masculine ein becomes einen: Marcos hat einen Hund.
