Opinions & Debates
British understatement, hedging und die Kunst des höflichen Widerspruchs

I reckon, I'd say: deine Meinung sagen
Vom sanften *I reckon* bis zum festen *without a doubt* — und warum „ich meine“ nicht *I mean* ist.
Abrir lección- Öffne deine Meinung je nach Stärke: I reckon / I think → I'd say → In my opinion → Without a doubt.
- I reckon ist umgangssprachlich; I'd say schwächt ab, ohne an Gewicht zu verlieren.
- In my opinion — nie after my opinion; statt I am of the opinion lieber I think.
- Verneint wird think: I don't think it's a good idea — wie „Ich glaube nicht, dass…“.
- I think so / I don't think so / I hope so / I hope not.
- „Was meinst du?“ = What do you think? — What do you mean? heißt „Was willst du damit sagen?“

Not bad, quite good: britisches Understatement
Warum *not bad* ein Lob ist, *quite good* lauwarm sein kann und *a bit of a nightmare* eine Katastrophe.
Abrir lección- Britisches Englisch schwächt ab: not bad = richtig gut; a bit of a nightmare = eine Katastrophe; not ideal = ein ernstes Problem.
- Interesting, nach einer Pause gesagt, versteckt oft Zweifel.
- Quite + steigerbares Adjektiv ist lauwarm (quite good); mit einem absoluten Adjektiv heißt es „völlig“ (quite right).
- Not very + positives Adjektiv kritisiert taktvoll: It wasn't very good.
- Deutsche Direktheit klingt schnell schroff — und wer wirklich loben will, sagt really good, lovely, brilliant.

I couldn't agree more: zustimmen und widersprechen
*You're right* (nie *you have right*), *I agree with you*, *fair point*, *I see it differently* — und das rätselhafte *yeah, no*.
Abrir lección- „Du hast recht“ = You're right — nie you have right.
- „Ich gebe dir recht“ = I agree with you — nie I give you right und nie I'm agree.
- Zustimmung: I suppose so → fair enough → exactly → I couldn't agree more.
- Widerspruch mit Takt: I'm not so sure, I see your point, but…, I see it differently — ein nacktes You're wrong klingt schroff.
- On the contrary ist stark: sparsam verwenden.
- Bei yeah, no zählt, was danach kommt.

Mind you, having said that: Konnektoren für Debatten
Die Verbindungswörter, mit denen Briten ein Argument aufbauen — und zwei gefährliche falsche Freunde: *actually* und *eventually*.
Abrir lección- On the one hand…, on the other… — immer mit on.
- Mind you hängt einen Haken an (wie „wobei…“); having said that / that said relativiert das Gesagte.
- To be fair, then again und at the end of the day sind gesprochene Sprache; in einer E-Mail however.
- Actually = eigentlich, tatsächlich; aktuell = currently / at the moment.
- Eventually = schließlich, am Ende; eventuell = possibly / might.
