Prefer: X to Y

Prefer (preferire) è un verbo regolare: I prefer, she prefers. L'accento cade sulla seconda sillaba: pre-FER.

  • Per confrontare due cose l'inglese usa to, non than: I prefer tea to coffee. — Preferisco il tè al caffè.
  • Con le attività, in -ing: I prefer walking to taking the bus.
  • Per un'occasione precisa, la forma più naturale è I'd prefer to + verbo (I'd = I would): I'd prefer to stay at home today. — Oggi preferirei restare a casa.

Un'altra forma molto comune è like X more than Y — qui sì, con than: I like the park more than the cinema. — Mi piace più il parco del cinema.

Per chiedere: Which do you prefer, tea or coffee? E per la cosa che ti piace di più, favourite — con la u, all'inglese: What's your favourite film? — Qual è il tuo film preferito?
