Opinions et débats

Exprimer, nuancer et débattre

  1. 1

I reckon, I'd say : donner son avis

Du discret *I reckon* au ferme *without a doubt* — pourquoi *selon moi* ne se dit pas *according to me*, et pourquoi *je pense que non* devient *I don't think so*.

    • Ouvre ton avis selon sa force : I reckon / I think → I'd say → In my opinion → Without a doubt.
    • I reckon est familier ; I'd say adoucit sans affaiblir.
    • Selon moi ≠ according to me : dis in my opinion ou I think.
    • On nie think : I don't think it's a good idea.
    • I think so / I don't think so / I hope so / I hope not — jamais I think no.
    • Pour demander : What do you think of…?, What did you make of…? — jamais How do you think?

Not bad, quite good : l'understatement britannique

Pourquoi *not bad* est un compliment, *quite good* peut être tiède et *a bit of a nightmare* est une catastrophe.

    • L'anglais britannique atténue : not bad = très bien ; a bit of a nightmare = une catastrophe ; not ideal = un vrai problème.
    • Interesting, dit après une pause, cache souvent des doutes.
    • Quite + adjectif gradable est tiède (quite good, un peu comme « assez bien ») ; avec un adjectif absolu, c'est « tout à fait » (quite right).
    • Not very + adjectif positif critique avec tact : It wasn't very good.
    • Pour un vrai compliment : really good, lovely, brilliant.

    I couldn't agree more : être d'accord et ne pas l'être

*I agree* (jamais *I am agree*), *you're right* (jamais *you have reason*), *fair point*, *I see it differently* — et le mystérieux *yeah, no*.

    • I agree (with you) — jamais I am agree ; à la forme négative, I don't agree ou I disagree.
    • Tu as raison = You're right ; tu as tort = You're wrong — jamais have reason.
    • Accord : I suppose so → fair enough → exactly → I couldn't agree more.
    • Désaccord avec tact : I'm not so sure, I see your point, but…, I see it differently.
    • On the contrary est fort : à utiliser avec modération.
    • Dans yeah, no, c'est la suite qui compte.

Mind you, having said that : les connecteurs du débat

Les connecteurs qui enchaînent un argument à la britannique — et deux faux amis redoutables : *actually* et *eventually*.

    • On the one hand…, on the other… — toujours avec on.
    • Mind you ajoute un bémol (remarque) ; having said that / that said nuance ce que tu viens de dire.
    • To be fair, then again et at the end of the day sont pour l'oral ; dans un e-mail, however.
    • Actually = en fait ; actuellement = currently / at the moment.
    • Eventually = finalement ; éventuellement = possibly.
