Prefer: X to Y

Prefer (preferir) es un verbo regular: I prefer, she prefers. Se acentúa en la segunda sílaba: pre-FER.

  • Para comparar dos cosas, el inglés usa to, no than: I prefer tea to coffee. — Prefiero el té al café.
  • Con actividades, en -ing: I prefer walking to taking the bus.
  • Para una ocasión concreta, lo más natural es I'd prefer to + verbo (I'd = I would): I'd prefer to stay at home today. — Hoy preferiría quedarme en casa.

Otra forma muy común es like X more than Y — aquí sí, con than: I like the park more than the cinema. — Me gusta más el parque que el cine.

Para preguntar: Which do you prefer, tea or coffee? Y para lo que más te gusta, favourite — con u, a la británica: What's your favourite film? — ¿Cuál es tu película favorita?
