Important Verbs

Fazer, ir, poder, querer — and the object pronouns

  1. 1

Fazer, ir, querer: doing, going, wanting

Three irregular verbs you'll use in almost every conversation — and how to ask someone what they want to do.

    • fazer (to do, to make): faço, faz, fazemos, fazem — fazer ioga, fazer compras.
    • ir (to go): vou, vai, vamos, vão — irregular all the way through.
    • querer (to want): quero, quer, queremos, querem.
    • Places take a or para: vou ao cinema, vou à praia, vou pra casa.
    • After querer — and ir — the next verb stays in the infinitive: quero ir, vou estudar.
    • Vamos! — Let's go! Vamos comer! — Let's eat!

Poder, saber, dizer: can, know, say

Two Portuguese verbs for “can”, how to report what people say — and how Brazilians say no without saying não.

    • poder: posso, pode, podemos, podem; saber: sei, sabe, sabemos, sabem; dizer: digo, diz, dizemos, dizem.
    • Saber + infinitive = a learned skill (sei nadar); poder + infinitive = able or allowed right now (hoje não posso).
    • Saber a fact (Não sei), but conhecer a person or a place (Conheço o Marcos).
    • Dizer que… — the que always stays. Como se diz…? and O que quer dizer…? are a learner's best friends.
    • A gente vê, vou tentar and talvez are often a gentle no. To decline yourself: Não posso + a reason.

Me, te, o, a: object pronouns

Stop repeating names — and learn the difference between the pronouns Brazilians write and the ones they say.

    • Object pronouns go before the verb in Brazil: Ela me ajuda. With two verbs, between them: Pode me ajudar?
    • me, te, nos — and te is the everyday object form of você: Eu te amo.
    • Him, her, them: o, a, os, as in writing; ele, ela, eles, elas after the verb in conversation — Eu conheço ele.
    • A gente works as an object too: O Marcos convida a gente. Often the object just disappears: Conheço!
    • To him / to her: pra ele, pra ela in speech; lhe is mostly a formal you.

    Fazendo planos: making plans

Invite, accept, turn down politely and fix a time and place — then join Marina and Luana as they plan their Saturday.

    • Fix a plan with Que dia? A que horas? Onde?
    • Invite with Você quer…? or Vamos…?; accept with Quero!, Posso, sim or Combinado!
    • Decline kindly: Não posso or Não dá, plus a reason — Fica pra próxima!
    • Comigo = with me; com a gente = with us; a gente se encontra = we meet up.
    • Eu te encontro na frente do museu — the object pronoun goes before the verb.
    • Tá de pé? — Are we still on?
