Five parts, every time
Italian conversation can be relaxed, but written Italian stays formal. Every business email follows the same skeleton:
| Part | Italian | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | Oggetto | Oggetto: Proposta di preventivo |
| Greeting | Saluto | Gentile Dott.ssa Bianchi, |
| Opening | Apertura | Le scrivo in riferimento a… |
| Body | Corpo | what you actually need to say |
| Closing | Chiusura | Cordiali saluti, / Distinti saluti, |
- Gentile works for anyone: Gentile Sig.ra Rossi, Gentile Dott. Ferri. Egregio is more formal, for men: Egregio Avvocato. To a company: Spett.le (Spettabile) Atlas Traduzioni.
- Titles are abbreviated: Dott. / Dott.ssa, Sig. / Sig.ra, Ing., Avv., Prof. / Prof.ssa.
- The greeting ends with a comma. Cordiali saluti is the everyday sign-off; Distinti saluti is more distant.
