If things were different

To imagine a situation that isn't real — or isn't likely — Italian uses se + the congiuntivo imperfetto, then the condizionale:

Se avessi tempo, viaggerei di più. — If I had time, I'd travel more.

The congiuntivo imperfetto is one of the most regular tenses in Italian: drop the -re of the infinitive and add -ssi:

Pronoun Parlare Prendere Dormire
(che) io parlassi prendessi dormissi
(che) tu parlassi prendessi dormissi
(che) lui / lei parlasse prendesse dormisse
(che) noi parlassimo prendessimo dormissimo
(che) voi parlaste prendeste dormiste
(che) loro parlassero prendessero dormissero

Only a handful are irregular: essere → fossi, fare → facessi, dire → dicessi, bere → bevessi, dare → dessi, stare → stessi. Avere is regular: avessi. Now try fare.
