Impersonal phrases: advice and possibility

Giving advice in Italian rarely sounds like an order. Instead, you say what's important, better or necessary — and the congiuntivo follows:

Trigger Meaning
è importante che… it's important that…
è meglio che… it's better that…, you'd better…
bisogna che… / è necessario che… it's necessary that…, you need to…
è possibile che… / può darsi che… it's possible that…, maybe…
è normale che… it's normal that…
  • È meglio che tu vada a letto presto. — You'd better go to bed early.
  • Può darsi che lei sia a casa. — She may be at home.

When the advice is general — nobody in particular — use the infinitive: È importante arrivare presto. Name a person, and che + congiuntivo appears: È importante che tu arrivi presto.
