Avere or essere?
Most verbs build the passato prossimo with avere. But verbs of movement from A to B, of staying, and of change of state use essere:
| Verb | Participle | Verb | Participle |
|---|---|---|---|
| andare — to go | andato | arrivare — to arrive | arrivato |
| venire — to come | venuto | partire — to leave | partito |
| tornare — to come back | tornato | uscire — to go out | uscito |
| entrare — to go in | entrato | restare — to stay | restato |
| nascere — to be born | nato | diventare — to become | diventato |
With essere, the participle agrees with the subject, like an adjective:
- Marcos è andato a Pisa. (m.) — Marina è andata a Siena. (f.)
- I ragazzi sono andati al mare. (m. pl.) — Le ragazze sono andate al mare. (f. pl.)
A mixed group takes the masculine plural: Marina e Marcos sono andati.
