The irregular participles

Many of the most common verbs — mostly -ere verbs — have a participle of their own. There's no rule; these are worth learning by heart:

Infinitive Participle Infinitive Participle
fare — to do, make fatto prendere — to take preso
dire — to say detto mettere — to put messo
vedere — to see visto chiudere — to close chiuso
leggere — to read letto aprire — to open aperto
scrivere — to write scritto rispondere — to answer risposto
bere — to drink bevuto spegnere — to switch off spento

They work exactly like regular ones: Ho fatto colazione. Hai visto Marcos? Abbiamo preso il treno.

Two useful ones with fare: fare una foto (to take a photo) and fare la fila (to queue).
