Stare: how are you?
Italian has a second verb that sometimes means to be: stare. Its home is the question how are you? and its answer:
- Come stai? — How are you? (to a friend)
- Come sta? — How are you? (polite, to someone you call Lei)
- Sto bene. — I'm well. Sto male. — I'm not well.
- Così così. — So-so. Benissimo! — Really well!
It also means to stay: Oggi sto a casa — today I'm staying at home.
