French gives advice gently — in the conditional:

Tu devrais + infinitive	You should… Tu devrais arriver en avance.
Tu pourrais + infinitive	You could… Tu pourrais lui écrire.
À ta place, je + conditional	If I were you, I'd… À ta place, je partirais.
Il vaudrait mieux + infinitive	It would be better to… Il vaudrait mieux partir tôt.

• Devrais is the conditional of devoir: plain tu dois means you must; tu devrais is the softer you should.
• With people you call vous: vous devriez, à votre place.
• In the negative, ne … pas wraps the conditional: Tu ne devrais pas t'excuser. — You shouldn't apologise.
