The Imperfect

L'imparfait and the past contrast

  1. 1

    Je jouais: forming the imparfait

French's second past tense — for what used to happen — built from one stem and one set of endings.

    • The imparfait is the past of habits and ongoing situations — English used to, would, or a plain past.
    • Stem: the nous form minus -ons (jouons → jou-); endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
    • Je jouais, il jouait and ils jouaient all sound the same.
    • Être is the one exception: j'étais, nous étions.
    • Signal words: autrefois, à l'époque, d'habitude, souvent, tous les étés — and le mercredi for every Wednesday.

C'était, il faisait, il y avait: setting the scene

Weather, age, feelings and what things looked like — the imparfait for describing the past, and a Paris neighbourhood as it used to be.

    • The imparfait describes the scene: weather, age, feelings, what things were like.
    • Il faisait beau / froid, il pleuvait, il neigeait for the weather.
    • Age and many feelings take avoir: j'avais dix ans, j'avais froid, j'avais peur.
    • C'était — it was; il y avait — there was, there were.
    • Être: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient.
    • Avant… maintenant and ne … plus say how things have changed.

Je lisais quand…: imparfait or passé composé?

The imparfait sets the scene, the passé composé moves the story on — how to tell a story in the past.

    • Imparfait for the scene — what was going on, what things were like; passé composé for what happened.
    • Je lisais quand le téléphone a sonné — the background first, then the event that breaks in.
    • Être en train de + infinitive stresses an action in progress: j'étais en train de lire.
    • Clues: soudain, tout à coup, un jour, hier → passé composé; pendant que, souvent, d'habitude → imparfait.
    • Some verbs shift meaning: j'avais peur (I was afraid) vs j'ai eu peur (I got a fright).

    Souvenirs d'enfance: childhood summers

Tu te souviens ? — talking about memories, and Luana's and Marcos's summers as children.

    • Se souvenir de — to remember: je me souviens de cet été, tu te souviens ?
    • Se rappeler means the same, without de: je me rappelle cet été.
    • Memories mix both pasts: imparfait for habits and the scene, passé composé for the moment that stands out — un jour, j'ai attrapé…
    • -ger verbs keep their e before a: je nageais — but nous nagions.
    • C'étaient des jours heureux — those were happy days.
