Avoir + a past participle
To say what happened, French mostly uses one tense: the passé composé. It's built from two pieces — avoir in the present, plus a past participle:
| Pronoun | avoir | + participle |
|---|---|---|
| j' | ai | parlé |
| tu | as | parlé |
| il / elle / on | a | parlé |
| nous | avons | parlé |
| vous | avez | parlé |
| ils / elles | ont | parlé |
The participle depends on the verb's family:
| Infinitive | Participle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -er: parler, manger, acheter | -é: parlé, mangé, acheté | J'ai mangé. |
| -ir: finir, choisir, dormir | -i: fini, choisi, dormi | Tu as fini ? |
| -re: vendre, attendre, perdre | -u: vendu, attendu, perdu | Il a attendu. |
Parlé and parler sound the same — only the spelling tells them apart.
