In the meeting
Everyday meetings are palaveri (informal) or kokous (formal). The language of a Finnish meeting is short, practical — and full of the conditional:
| Finnish | English |
|---|---|
| esityslista | the agenda |
| määräaika / (spoken) dedis | the deadline |
| Ehdottaisin, että… | I'd suggest that… |
| Voisinko kommentoida? | Could I comment? |
| Kuka hoitaa tämän? — Minä voin hoitaa sen. | Who'll take care of this? — I can take care of it. |
| Palataan tähän ensi viikolla. | Let's come back to this next week. |
| Sovitaanko näin? — Sovitaan. | Shall we agree on that? — Agreed. |
| Onko muuta? | Anything else? (any other business?) |
Notice the passive for let's: palataan, sovitaan — the written-Finnish cousin of spoken me mennään.
