Should, ought to, it'd be worth it
Finnish advice follows the pattern of minun täytyy from unit 9 — the person goes in the genitive (minun, sinun, hänen…), and the verb stays in the hän form:
| Finnish | English |
|---|---|
| Sinun pitäisi nukkua enemmän. | You should sleep more. |
| Sinun kannattaisi tulla aikaisin. | It'd be worth your while coming early. / You'd do well to come early. |
| Minun pitäisi soittaa äidille. | I ought to ring my mum. |
| Meidän ei pitäisi myöhästyä. | We shouldn't be late. |
Pitäisi is a duty, should; kannattaisi (from kannattaa, to be worth it) is friendly, practical advice. The negative is simply ei in front: Sinun ei kannattaisi… — you'd better not…
