Would: a new mood

Everything so far has been real — things that happen, happened or will happen. The conditional (konditionaali) opens the door to things you would do, would like, or wish were true.

English needs an extra word, would. Finnish needs no extra word at all: it slots the marker -isi- between the verb stem and the personal ending you already know.

olla mennä puhua haluta
minä olisin menisin puhuisin haluaisin
sinä olisit menisit puhuisit haluaisit
hän olisi menisi puhuisi haluaisi
me olisimme menisimme puhuisimme haluaisimme
te olisitte menisitte puhuisitte haluaisitte
he olisivat menisivät puhuisivat haluaisivat
  • Olisin mielelläni Helsingissä. — I'd love to be in Helsinki.
  • Menisitkö kauppaan? — Would you go to the shop?

Note that the hän form never lengthens its last vowel: it's olisi, not ~~olisii~~.
