Stem + i + ending

The Finnish simple past — the imperfekti — puts an -i- between the stem and the ending you already know. The endings don't change at all:

puhua asua olla
minä puhuin asuin olin
sinä puhuit asuit olit
hän puhui asui oli
me puhuimme asuimme olimme
te puhuitte asuitte olitte
he puhuivat asuivat olivat

One person needs no ending in the past either: hän puhui — he / she spoke.

To find the stem, take the minä form and drop the -n: puhun → puhu-. Then watch the last vowel:

  • -o, -u, -y, -ö stay: puhuin, sanoin, asuin
  • -e drops: luen → luin, tulen → tulin, olen → olin
  • -a, -ä usually drop: ostan → ostin, pidän → pidin
