The Object

Total vs. partial objects

  1. 1

Kirjan or kirjaa? Whole or partial

The total object -n and the partial object -a: one of the deepest ideas in Finnish, taken slowly.

    • Total object -n: complete, the whole thing — Ostan kirjan. Syön omenan.
    • Partial object -a / -ä: ongoing, unfinished or some — Luen kirjaa. Juon kahvia.
    • A total object can sound like the future: Luen kirjan huomenna. — I'll read the book tomorrow.
    • English -ing (I'm reading) usually means the partitive.
    • In doubt? The partitive is the safer bet.

    En osta kirjaa: always partitive

Two rules that make the choice for you: negatives, and verbs like odottaa, auttaa and rakastaa.

    • Negative → always partitive: Ostan kirjan → En osta kirjaa.
    • Some verbs always take the partitive: rakastaa, odottaa, auttaa, etsiä, katsoa (TV), kuunnella.
    • No preposition needed: Odotan Luanaa — I'm waiting for Luana.
    • Etsin lompakkoa (searching) → Löydän lompakon (found it!).
    • Odottaa: odotan, odotat, odottaa, odotamme, odotatte, odottavat.

    • Pronoun total objects end in -t: minut, sinut, hänet, meidät, teidät, heidät.
    • It and they (things): sen / sitä, ne / niitä.
    • Complete → total: Otan sen. Näen sinut huomenna.
    • Feeling, ongoing or negative → partial: Rakastan sinua. En löydä sitä.
    • Hänen = his / her; hänet = him / her.

Munat or munia? The birthday cake

Plural objects, objects in commands — and a surprise cake for Luana's birthday.

    • Plural objects: total -t (Ostan munat) or partial plural (Ostan munia).
    • Jauhot (flour) is plural: jauhoja — some flour.
    • Commands drop the -n: Osta kakku! Ota pulla! — but Älä osta kakkua!
    • Buying at a shop is from it in Finnish: Ostan munat kaupasta.
    • Hyvää syntymäpäivää! / Paljon onnea!
