One recipe for every verb
In Unit 1 you said en ole, et ole, ei ole. The same little negative verb works with every Finnish verb. The recipe:
- Take the minä form and drop the -n: puhun → puhu, asun → asu, ostan → osta.
- Put the right negative verb in front: en, et, ei, emme, ette, eivät.
| puhua | asua | ostaa | |
|---|---|---|---|
| minä | en puhu | en asu | en osta |
| sinä | et puhu | et asu | et osta |
| hän | ei puhu | ei asu | ei osta |
| me | emme puhu | emme asu | emme osta |
| te | ette puhu | ette asu | ette osta |
| he | eivät puhu | eivät asu | eivät osta |
The main verb is the same in every row — only the negative verb changes. That's why hän ei asuu is wrong: the doubled vowel belongs to the affirmative asuu, not to the negative.
