Review & Farewell

Bringing it all together — and a goodbye

  1. 1

¡Llegamos! The pasts on the road

Indefinido, imperfecto, estaba + -ndo and the perfecto, side by side — telling the story of the first days in Ibiza.

    • Indefinido for finished events: Llegamos el lunes. Fuimos al centro.
    • Imperfecto for the scene and for habits: Hacía mucho calor. Íbamos a la playa todos los días.
    • Estaba + -ndo for an action in progress, often interrupted: Estaba sacando una foto cuando Bidu saltó al agua.
    • Perfecto for today and this week: Hoy hemos alquilado unas bicis — but ayer alquilamos.
    • Irregular indefinidos: fui / fue / fuimos (ser and ir), tuve, hice / hizo, estuve — plus saqué, llegué, empecé.

¿Ser o estar? The tricky cases

Same adjective, different meaning; where things are; and tener calor — all on a beach in Ibiza.

    • Ser for what something is: identity, characteristics, days and times — and where an event takes place: La fiesta es en el hotel.
    • Estar for how or where something is: feelings, changing conditions, results — and the location of anything, buildings included: El hotel está cerca de la playa.
    • Some adjectives shift meaning: es aburrido (boring) vs está aburrido (bored); es listo (clever) vs está listo (ready); está rica — delicious.
    • Tener + noun for how you feel: tener hambre, sed, calor, sueño, prisa — with mucho / mucha.
    • Hace calor is the weather; tengo calor is you. Never estoy caliente.

Sunset in Ibiza: comparisons, pronouns — and echar de menos

Compare places and people, put me, te and os in the right place — and find the words for missing someone.

    • Compare with más / menos … que and tan … como: tan bonita como Cala Comte.
    • Mejor (better) and peor (worse) — never más mejor; mayor and menor mostly compare age.
    • Object pronouns go before the verb: Luana me abrazó. Te llamo. With ir a + infinitive, before or attached: Te voy a llamar / Voy a llamarte.
    • Os is you for vosotros; after a preposition: para mí, conmigo, contigo.
    • Echar de menos — to miss: Te echo de menos. Os voy a echar de menos.

No es un adiós: looking back, looking ahead

Past, present and future in a single goodbye — and why, in Spain, adiós can be everyday or final.

    • A period that's just ending takes the perfecto in Spain: Ha sido un año inolvidable.
    • How things used to be takes the imperfecto: No hablaba español. A finished moment, the indefinido: Llegué hace un año.
    • Plans and promises: ir a + infinitive or the future — Voy a volver. Volveré.
    • Fue is both ser and ir: Fue increíble (was), Fue a Ibiza (went), Se fue (left).
    • Goodbyes: adiós, hasta luego, hasta pronto, buen viaje, cuídate, un abrazo — and no es un adiós, es un hasta luego.
