Memories

The imperfect — and how it differs from the indefinido

  1. 1

Yo jugaba: the past of old habits

A second past tense for what you used to do — with endings regular enough to learn in one go.

    • The imperfecto is the past of habits and ongoing situations — used to, would, or a plain past in English.
    • Endings: -aba for -ar verbs, -ía for -er and -ir verbs: jugaba, comía, vivía.
    • Yo and él / ella share a form; watch the accents: jugábamos, comíamos, vivía.
    • Signal words: antes, de pequeño, en aquella época, siempre, todos los días, los domingos.
    • Cuando era niño / niña… — the classic way to start a memory.

Era, iba, veía: setting the scene

The only three verbs that break the imperfecto pattern — and how to say what things were like: age, weather, feelings.

    • Only three verbs are irregular in the imperfecto: ser (era), ir (iba), ver (veía).
    • Everything else is regular: tenía, hacía, estaba.
    • The imperfecto sets the scene: age (tenía siete años), descriptions (era pequeña), feelings (estaba cansada), the time (eran las ocho).
    • Weather takes hacía: hacía calor, hacía frío. There was / were is always había.
    • Solía + infinitive = used to: Solía ir a la playa.

Estaba en casa cuando…: two pasts together

The imperfecto sets the scene, the indefinido tells what happened — how Spanish tells a story in the past.

    • Stories need both pasts: the imperfecto for the scene, the indefinido for what happened.
    • Estaba en casa cuando sonó el teléfono — background first, then the event.
    • Something in progress: estaba + -ndo — Estaba durmiendo.
    • Clues: ayer, de repente, una vez → indefinido; mientras, siempre, antes → imperfecto.
    • Conocí = I met; conocía = I knew. Supe = I found out; sabía = I knew.

El álbum de fotos: childhood memories

Bikes, hide-and-seek and a mother calling from the window — talking about childhood, and why the plaza is the heart of a Spanish town.

    • Childhood words: la infancia, el colegio, los juguetes, montar en bici, subir a los árboles.
    • Games and sports take jugar a + article: jugar al escondite, jugar al fútbol.
    • Cuando + imperfecto + imperfecto = whenever: Cuando llovía, nos quedábamos en casa.
    • Ir → iba, íbamos: Íbamos al pueblo de mis abuelos.
    • A whole period seen as finished takes the indefinido: Fue una infancia muy feliz.
