Preferences & Opinions

Gustar, preferir and the irregular comparatives

  1. 1

Me gusta: what you like doing

Why Spanish likes things backwards — gusta or gustan, a mí, a Luana — plus hobbies and how much you love them.

    • Gustar works backwards: the thing you like is the subject — me gusta one thing or an activity, me gustan several things.
    • Who likes it: me, te, le, nos, os, les — with a name, a + le: A Luana le gusta leer.
    • Jugar al + sport, tocar + instrument: jugar al pádel, tocar la guitarra.
    • Me encanta(n) = I love; no me gusta nada = I don't like it at all.

    Prefiero: what you'd rather do

Preferir, me gusta más, a mí también, me da igual — choosing between two options.

    • Preferir: prefiero, prefieres, prefiere, preferimos, preferís, prefieren — e → ie, like querer.
    • Preferir takes no preposition: Prefiero el té. Prefiero quedarme en casa.
    • Two options: preferir X a Y — Prefiero el cine al teatro — or me gusta más X que Y.
    • React with a mí también / a mí tampoco / a mí sí / a mí no — not yo — after gustar.
    • Don't mind? Me da igual. Can't decide? Depende.

    Mejor, peor, mayor, menor

Better, worse, older, younger — the best park in Madrid, the worst thing about August, and the handy -ísimo.

    • Four irregular comparatives: mejor (better), peor (worse), mayor (older), menor (younger) — no más in front.
    • They have plurals but no feminine: mejores, peores, mayores, menores.
    • For size, Spanish usually says más grande / más pequeño; mayor and menor are mostly for age.
    • Superlative: el mejor restaurante de Madrid, el parque más bonito de Madrid — in is de.
    • Lo mejor de… / lo peor de… = the best / worst thing about; -ísimo = really: buenísimo.

    El fin de semana perfecto

Sport, football loyalties and the great park-or-cinema debate — plus a weekend plan everyone can agree on.

    • Sport and leisure: jugar al pádel, hacer senderismo, tomar el sol, dar un paseo, quedarse en casa.
    • Supporting a team is ser de: ¿De qué equipo eres? — Soy del Atleti.
    • Real Madrid against Barcelona is el Clásico; against Atlético, the derbi madrileño.
    • Negotiate with ¿Qué tal si…?, (No) estoy de acuerdo, Tengo una idea mejor, ¿Qué os parece? — and close with ¡Hecho!
