To say what's happening right now, Spanish works much like English be + -ing: a form of estar plus the gerundio, the -ndo form of the verb.

Estoy hablando con Luana. — I'm talking to Luana.

To make the gerundio, swap the infinitive ending: -ar verbs take -ando, -er and -ir verbs take -iendo.

• Only estar changes for the person: estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están. The gerundio never changes — no gender, no plural: Luana está comiendo, los niños están comiendo.
• Even ser, tener and estar follow the rule: siendo, teniendo, estando.
