Two halves, locked together
A wenn-sentence about something that isn't true has two halves: an unreal condition and its unreal consequence. Both take the Konjunktiv II.
Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr reisen. — If I had time, I'd travel more. (I don't have time.)
| Condition | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Wenn ich du wäre, | würde ich den Job annehmen. |
| Wenn wir mehr Geld hätten, | würden wir nach Japan reisen. |
| Wenn er könnte, | würde er sofort umziehen. |
annehmen — to accept, take (a job, an offer); umziehen — to move house.
English does something similar: it borrows a past form — if I had, if I were — to show the condition isn't real. The German Konjunktiv II is built on the past-tense stem too.
