Plans and Travels

Talking about the future without a future tense

  1. 1

Morgen fahre ich: the future in the present

German rarely needs a future tense — the present plus a time word does the job.

    • For plans, German uses the present tense + a time word: Morgen fahre ich nach Hamburg.
    • Time words: morgen, übermorgen, heute Abend, am Wochenende, bald, nächste Woche, nächstes Jahr.
    • The verb stays second: Im Juli fahren wir nach Bayern.
    • Fahren for wheels and rails, fliegen for planes, gehen on foot — and du fährst, er fährt.
    • Urlaub is time off work; Ferien are school or university holidays.

Am 13. Juli: days, months and dates

Days of the week, months, seasons and ordinal numbers — how to say exactly when.

    • Days, months and seasons are all masculine: der Montag, der Juli, der Sommer.
    • am + day (am Freitag), im + month or season (im Juli), um + clock time (um neun Uhr).
    • Dates use ordinals: der dritte Juli — written der 3. Juli; irregular erste, dritte, siebte, achte.
    • After am, vom and zum, the ordinal ends in -en: am dreizehnten, vom 13. bis zum 19. Juli.
    • Ask the date with Der Wievielte ist heute?
    • 3. Oktober is German Unity Day — and the Oktoberfest starts in September.

Ich werde…: the future with werden

When German does use a future tense — promises, predictions and the weather forecast.

    • The future tense: werden in second place + infinitive at the end — Ich werde dich vermissen.
    • ich werde, du wirst, er wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie werden.
    • Use it for promises, predictions and, with wohl, guesses: Er wird wohl noch schlafen.
    • For plans, the present is usually enough: Morgen fahre ich nach München.
    • Ich will = I want — never I will.
    • On its own, werden means to get, to become: Es wird dunkel.

Fahrkarte, Gleis, Verspätung: travelling by train

Tickets, platforms, changes and delays — the words for a German train journey, and what to pack.

    • At the station: die Fahrkarte, das Gleis, die Abfahrt, die Ankunft, die Verspätung.
    • A ticket is einfach (single) or hin und zurück (return).
    • Separable verbs split in a simple sentence: Der Zug fährt um neun ab.
    • After a modal, they stay whole at the end: Wir müssen in Hannover umsteigen.
    • Der Zug hat zehn Minuten Verspätung. — The train is ten minutes late.
    • The Deutschlandticket covers local and regional transport — not ICE or IC trains.
