Me, you, us: pronouns as objects
When a person is the object of the verb, the pronoun changes — just as der becomes den in the accusative:
| Subject | Object | English |
|---|---|---|
| ich | mich | me |
| du | dich | you |
| er / sie / es | ihn / sie / es | him / her / it |
| wir | uns | us |
| ihr | euch | you (plural) |
| sie / Sie | sie / Sie | them / you (formal) |
- Verstehst du mich? — Do you understand me?
- Ich treffe dich um zwei. — I'll meet you at two.
- Kannst du uns abholen? — Can you pick us up?
Only ihn echoes der → den; sie, es and Sie look just like the subject forms.
With a modal, the pronoun comes early and the infinitive still waits at the end. A separable verb such as abholen (to pick up), anrufen (to phone) or mitkommen (to come along) stays in one piece there: Ich kann dich morgen anrufen.
