Daily Routine

Reflexive verbs and telling the time

  1. 1

    Ich wasche mich: reflexive verbs

Washing, sitting down, hurrying — the verbs you do to yourself, with mich, dich, sich.

    • Reflexive verbs carry sich in the infinitive: sich waschen, sich setzen, sich beeilen, sich freuen.
    • The pronoun matches the subject: mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich.
    • It follows the conjugated verb — and the subject, when that comes after the verb: Ich dusche mich. Morgens dusche ich mich.
    • Waschen changes its vowel: du wäschst dich, er wäscht sich.
    • Some verbs are reflexive only in German: sich beeilen (to hurry), sich freuen auf (to look forward to).

    Ich stehe auf: separable verbs

Aufstehen, anrufen, fernsehen — verbs that split in two, with the prefix waiting at the end.

    • Separable verbs split: the main part takes second place, the prefix goes to the end — Ich stehe um sieben auf.
    • aufstehen, aufwachen, anrufen, einkaufen, fernsehen, mitkommen all work this way.
    • Separable and reflexive: Ich ziehe mich schnell an.
    • Questions too: Wann stehst du auf? Kommst du mit?
    • an, auf, aus, ein, mit, zurück, fern split; be-, ver-, er- never do.

    Einundzwanzig: numbers 20 to 100

Count to a hundred the German way — units first — and read the clock like a timetable.

    • Tens: zwanzig, dreißig, vierzig, fünfzig, sechzig, siebzig, achtzig, neunzig, hundert — watch dreißig, sechzig, siebzig.
    • Units first, then und, then the ten — one word: einundzwanzig, siebenundvierzig.
    • On the phone, zwo often stands in for zwei.
    • The official clock: hours + Uhr + minutes — neunzehn Uhr dreißig.
    • Wie spät ist es? asks the time; um says at: um sieben Uhr zwölf.

    Halb acht: the everyday clock

Viertel nach, halb, Viertel vor — tell the time the way people say it, then follow Luana through her day.

    • Viertel nach (quarter past), Viertel vor (quarter to), fünf nach / zehn vor.
    • halb neun is 8:30 — halfway to nine, the opposite of British half nine.
    • um + time: um halb acht. Ask Wann…? or Um wie viel Uhr…?
    • Habits take -s: morgens, mittags, nachmittags, abends, nachts. Morgen means tomorrow.
    • Separable and reflexive verbs carry a whole day: Ich stehe auf, ziehe mich an, lege mich hin.
